Journalist Shorouq Al-Eila, a graduate of Islamic University of Gaza holding a Master’s degree in Journalism from Department of Journalism and Media at the Faculty of Arts, has won the prestigious International Emmy Award in the News & Documentary category. The award was granted for her participation in a documentary film entitled “In Real Life… A Hidden War”, which highlights the violations committed by the occupation during the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The International Emmy Awards are among the most distinguished global honours, recognising excellence in television production outside the United States. They are presented by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and are held annually in New York City. The awards extend the scope of the Emmy Awards, which were originally limited to American television productions.
The Emmy Awards encompass a wide range of television production categories, including the Primetime Emmy Awards, Daytime Emmy Awards, International Emmy Awards, News and Documentary Emmy Awards, Sports Emmy Awards, Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, as well as honours for artistic and technical achievement.
Commenting on the documentary, Al-Eila explained that the film immerses viewers in the realities of loss, famine, shortages of medicine and displacement, noting that it conveys experiences and truths “that the camera was unable to capture”.
Al-Eila affirmed that winning the prestigious Emmy Award represents an achievement for all Palestinian journalists, including the 228 journalists who were killed during the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip in 2023.
It is worth noting that Al-Eila received the International Press Freedom Award in 2024, presented annually in New York by the “Committee to Protect Journalists” to journalists working under exceptionally difficult conditions.
