Najlaa Iskafi, a graduate of Department of Journalism and Media, the Faculty of Arts, at Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) and a member of the editorial team at Akhir Qissa (Last Story) website, has won the prestigious 2024 Qarib Award in the category of Best Coverage of Women Affected by Conflict and Crises.
Iskafi received this journalistic accolade for her article published on Akhir Qissa during the height of the Israeli offensive on Gaza. Her report, titled “Climate Shocks Faced by Women in Displacement Camps,” shed light on the hardships endured by displaced women living in tents, focusing on the physical and psychological challenges they face as a result of climate-related conditions and inadequate shelter.
The Qarib Awards programme, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and implemented by the French Media Development Agency (CFI), is recognised as one of the leading international media awards. This year’s competition drew entries from 100 journalists across various Arab countries, all vying to highlight under-reported social issues with sensitivity and ethical rigour.
The Qarib Awards aim to promote journalism that is attentive to marginalised groups and to topics that receive limited attention in mainstream media, particularly issues affecting women, vulnerable communities, and the environment — all while upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
