East-West Life Sciences Exchange

East-West Life Sciences Exchange

As long as we coexist on the same planet, geography can never sever the effects of our natural resource utilization. Natural resource sustainability has become a global goal; thus, universities across the world collaborate to develop scientific research that serves the environment and humanity.

As part of EU’s Erasmus Plus program, Dr. Jawdat Abu Taha, the Head of the Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Systems Department at the Islamic University, has completed an international exchange period at BOKU- University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Austria.

Christoph Pfeifer, the Deputy Head of the Department of Material Sciences and Process Engineering, accompanied the visitor on a campus tour, highlighting the significant institutions in the department. That included the Institute of Wood Technology and Renewable Materials, the Institute of Physics and Materials Science, the Institute of Chemical and Energy Engineering, and the Institute of Molecular Modeling and Simulation.

The visit also included a field trip to the laboratories where the students run tests on natural resources. BOKU University team presented a comprehensive review of the technologies used in the conversion of renewable raw materials. They showed innovative designs and methods of experimenting with computer-based models.

At the theoretical level, the team explored various strategies to select research topics that achieve the objectives of development plans. What is unique about their approach is that not only do they tackle global challenges such as biodiversity loss and climate change, but they also focus on providing solutions that achieve environmental sustainability.

Professor Abu Taha discussed burning subjects in the meetings held with the professors and higher education students at the host university. He delivered a presentation illustrating two of his studies on renewable energy applications in Palestine. Both research papers, PV Diesel Hybrid Energy Supply for Nasser Hospital in the Gaza Strip and Micro-Grid Modeling Approach for Nasser Medical Complex Energy Demand in the Gaza Strip, suggested pathways to get clean energy with the lowest costs.

“I am glad to visit the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Austria. We look forward to further collaboration between the two universities. A paradigm shift will definitely occur if we continue working together on detailed investigations and co-training programs.”
