The Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) has announced the renewal of an agreement that is set to deepen scientific cooperation between IUG, Al-Aqsa University, Al-Azhar University in Gaza, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The agreement, which has been signed once again, will renew the UNESCO Chair for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences and appoint Professor Sufian Tayeh as its new holder.
Professor Nasser Farhat, President of the Islamic University of Gaza, praised the efforts of the Palestinian National Committee in achieving the agreement renewal, noting that its head, Prof. Dr. Ali Abu Zuhri, had made commendable efforts. He also thanked the Palestinian delegation to UNESCO in Paris for their support.
Prof. Dr. Yousef Aljaish, Dean of Scientific Research and Postgraduate Studies, hailed the renewal as a significant achievement and congratulated the organizers on their efforts. He also congratulated Professor Tayeh on his appointment as the new holder of the UNESCO Chair, adding that he will work to strengthen cooperation between UNESCO, partner universities, and local and international communities to achieve the objectives of the Chair and its various activities.
Professor Tayeh, who holds a title of Professor in theoretical physics and is a faculty member in the Physics department at the Islamic University, expressed his hope that the renewal of the UNESCO Chair would lead to greater scientific opportunities for exchange and cooperation at the national, regional, and international levels. It is worth noting that he has received several scientific awards, including the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Young Arab Scientists, and is among the top 2% of researchers worldwide based on a study conducted by Elsevier Publishing and Stanford University in the United States. His significant contributions to the field of scientific studies and research are annually published in prestigious scientific journals.
The renewal of the agreement between the Islamic University, Al-Aqsa University, Al-Azhar University in Gaza, and UNESCO represents a significant step towards the development of astronomy, astrophysics, and space sciences in Palestine.
