Dr. Abdel-Rahman Salman Al-Daya, from the Faculty of Sharia and Law at the Islamic University of Gaza, took part in a workshop held by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Amman, Jordan, entitled “Environmental Protection and Climate Change from the Perspective of Islamic Sharia and International Humanitarian Law.” He was there with representatives from Hebron University, Palestine Ahliya University in Bethlehem, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Gaza.
Fifteen specialists and academics in Islamic law from Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine, as well as a group of researchers and technical experts, participated in the workshop. Several issues were addressed during the workshop that are endangering the natural environment in each of these countries as a result of ongoing wars, such as Yemen.
Examples of these problems include the vegetation cover, which is decreasing significantly as a result of the logging process for the purposes of providing alternatives to cooking gas, and the problem of the marshes drying up in southern Iraq as a result of successive wars and the establishment of dams in the areas of river sources, as well as the presence of the occupation in Palestine, which poses a clear danger.
