IUG inaugurates “Women in Folktales” exhibition

Prof. Dr. Nasser Farhat, IUG President; Dr. Osama Hamdan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Dr. Musheer Amer, Deputy Dean; Dr. Mahmoud Baroud, Head of the English Language Department; and Dr. Refaat Al-Areer, Faculty Member of the English Language Department, inaugurated the exhibition entitled “Women in Folktales” as part of the activities of the “Using Folktales for Gender Equality” project, in partnership with the University of Glasgow, Scotland. The exhibition was scheduled to last for five days, from November 28 to December 1, 2022.

Prof. Dr. Farhat addressed the fact that the Islamic University organizes various exhibitions that support the position of Arab women in order to introduce society to their important and effective role. He noted that the exhibition is compatible with the role of women in society and that it aims to demonstrate cultures from around the world.

Dr. Baroud stressed that the exhibition is characterized by extracurricular activities, as they represent an experience students do not witness in lecture halls. The exhibition targets the entire community and university students as well.

The exhibition featured numerous corners that represented the cultures of various countries. The culture of a country that has experienced persecution and wars over the years is introduced. These corners are: the indigenous people of America, Nigeria, Brazil, the Amazigh, Malaysia, Palestine, Cuba, and others.

Cuba Corner showed the sequence of women’s appearances in folktales and how they had a role in society. Cuba has a similarity to the Palestinian issue and its impact on the role of women in society. This is in addition to the “Palestine Corner” of folktales, which linked a number of Palestinian issues with several tales around the world.
