Prof. Dr. Talaat Abdel-Hamid Issa, Professor of Media, Department of Journalism and Media, Faculty of Arts, Islamic University of Gaza, participated in the “Journalism in the Time of Fake News” conference, organized by the Arab-US Association for Communication Educators in cooperation with Orebro University in Sweden.
Prof. Issa participated with a research paper entitled “Palestinian journalists’ mechanisms for verifying fake news on social networks.”
The research adopted an electronic survey form and concluded that Facebook and WhatsApp are the social networks that spread fake news the most, according to the research sample, which included 166 male and female journalists in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
The research confirmed that Palestinian journalists use mechanisms to verify fake news to a high degree, relying more on Palestinian and Arab verification sites and tools, compared to foreign ones, to verify such news.
The conference was held in seven simultaneous sessions in Arabic and English, in addition to a number of workshops and panel discussions, over three days from October 12 to 14.
It is noteworthy that the conference was held in Orebro, Sweden, with the participation of researchers from the United States of America, Sweden, Austria, Spain, and Germany, and Arab researchers from Egypt, Palestine, Algeria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia.
