The Communicable Diseases Surveillance Center (CDSC), the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Islamic University of Gaza, organized an awareness campaign on the occasion of Global Handwashing Day. The campaign targeted the female students of the Islamic University of all disciplines who are on campus during the university’s spare time.
The female students of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences participated in this campaign by delivering awareness messages through loudspeakers. A group of volunteers in charge of the health club for female students spoke about the importance of washing hands and its role in preventing and fighting the spread of infection, stressing the need to reinforce this behavior to culturize it among the university students.
Prof. Dr. Abdelraouf Elmanama, CDSC director, accompanied by Ms. Nour Abu Tayym and Ms. Renad Abu Dan, teaching members of the Faculty of Health Sciences, supervised the activity and guided the participating students.
Prof. Elmanama pointed out that the Global Handwashing Day is an opportunity to raise awareness and understand the importance of washing hands with soap as an effective and inexpensive method to prevent disease and save lives, adding: “It is also an opportunity to design, test, and iterate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at crucial times.”
Moreover, Prof. Elmanama participated in the activities of the International Week for Infection Control at the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital. In his opening speech, he explained the significance of the role of infection control committees in hospitals. He reviewed the progress in this field and explained why it is important to focus on spreading awareness among health workers and the public about this subject, which helps reduce the number of infections, complications, and deaths associated with nosocomial infections.
