Department of Fundamentals of Education in Faculty of Education at Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) held a study day entitled: “Educational and pedagogical wastage in public education: reality and solutions”, in the presence the faculty dean, faculty members, a group of researchers and interested persons, a group of participants from the Ministry of Education, members of the academic staff in universities, and university students.
Opening Session
Prof. Elyan Alholi, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, stressed that the wastage has causes related to the educational system and the student’s economic, social, personal, health and mental conditions. He indicated that it has hazardous features that escalate rapidly, it differs from one stage to another and results in forgetting what students learn.
Prof. Alholi noted that studies suggested many ways to reduce wastage, including: enhancing awareness, improving quality, and solving problems, through the cooperation of all parties in easing homework, periodic tests, worksheets, diagnostic tests, and employing modern technology such as electronic games and educational videos.
Prof. Ibrahim Alastal, Dean of the faculty, pointed out that the Faculty of Education inspects field and educational problems and discusses them to reach appropriate solutions through the research, advisory and service aspects that the faculty provides. He explained that the educational field needs to discuss the educational wastage by listening to the problems spreading among parents, students and faculty members about Corona pandemic period and addressing them in correct ways.
Dr. Monawar Najm, Head of the Preparatory Committee and Head of the Department of Fundamental Education, pointed out that the study day sheds light on public education wastage, AKA educational loss, and is considered one of the problems facing the educational sector in various countries in the world and at a greater rate in developing countries. She indicated that this phenomenon has emerged strongly during Corona pandemic and the accompanying closure of schools and universities, and the transformation of face-to-face education into electronic without prior preparation.
Dr. Najm stated that educational wastage requires experts, officials and educators to think carefully of finding effective tools to measure the percentage of educational wastage among learners, and how to reduce it, bearing in mind that the wastage has causes, damages and significant negative repercussions on the individual and the educational community.
First Session
The first scientific session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Hamdan Alsufi, and the following topics were addressed:
- “The level of educational wastage of spelling skill among students in the basic stage” by Dr. Amr Abu Salem.
- “The effects of educational wastage during Corona pandemic – problems and solutions” by Dr. Samia Skaik.
- “The reality of value-instilling programs by the Palestinian Ministry of Education to reduce value loss among primary school students in light of Corona pandemic” by Ms. Lina Aljarousha.
- “The repercussions of value loss among students on school discipline and ways to reduce it” by Mr. Roaa Alsalhat.
- “The effectiveness of Reading-School initiative in addressing educational wastage in oral reading among school students” by Ms. Fatima Abu Shawish.
- “The impact of educational and pedagogical wastage on educational process and proposals to reduce it” by Ms. Amal Qeshta.
Second Session
The second scientific session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Suleiman Almuzain, and the following topics were addressed:
- “The expected supervisory role of Palestinian school principals in addressing the problem of educational wastage” by Dr. Mahmoud Khalafallah and Dr. Mahmoud Shbeir.
- “The role of school administration in compensating the educational and pedagogical wastage in primary schools in Rafah Governorate” by Ms. Nisreen Odwan and Ms. Sujoud Abu Daqqa.
- “The role of parents in reducing educational wastage among their children and ways to develop it” by Dr. Khaled Alattar, Mr. Bilal Alattar, and Ms. Najwan Aldabbah.
- “The role of the mosque in modifying behavioral wastage among public education students” by Prof. Fayez Shaldan and Ms. Asma Tabasi.
- “The role of digital repositories in reducing the causes of educational wastage among secondary school students” by Dr. Ahmed Alsourani and Dr. Mahmoud Assaf.
