Communicable Disease Surveillance Center, Faculty of Health Sciences, hosts an expert on antibiotic management

Communicable Disease Surveillance Center (CDSC), Faculty of Health Sciences at Islamic University of Gaza hosted Dr. Matilda Bergham, an antibiotic management expert at Médecins Sans Frontières/Belgium (MSF), to give an interactive lecture in the context of her specialty “Antibiotic Management.”

The lecture was attended by: Prof. Abdelraoud Elmanama, Director of CDSC and Dean of Quality and Development Deanship at IUG, Dr. Mazen Alzaharna, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Hamid Alkhodari, Vice Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Khamis Elessi, Vice Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Nabil Alaila, Alaqsa University, and a number of (MSF) employees, and a group of postgraduate students of Fighting Infection master program.

Prof. Elmanama welcomed the expert and attendees, and stressed on the importance of attending this meeting which highlights the significance and sensitivity of the subject of Antibiotic Management. He noted that improving conditions and wise management of antibiotics are crucial to patient safety and the future of medicine. He added that: “This can lead to improving patient results, save money, reduce resistance, and help prevent adverse consequences resulting from the misuse or excessive use of antibiotics”.

Dr. Bergham, asked interactive questions on the subject, and spoke in some detail about the definition of bacteria resistance to antimicrobials in the Gaza Strip, and how to prescribe and use antibiotics. She also explained the concept of antibiotic supervision, and how to improve antibiotic use.

Dr. Bergham discussed with the attendees the effectiveness of antibiotic supervision, the link among antibiotic supervision, microbiology laboratories, and Fighting Infection Department, and what party is responsible for antibiotics supervision. At the conclusion of the lecture, Dr. Bergham explained the role of everyone in supervising antibiotics.
