Academic from IUG Health Sciences has been an external examiner of a PhD student in the Faculty of Environment and Biological Sciences at the University of Salford-Manchester.
Professor Adnan al-Hindi, who is the Professor of Medical Parasitology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Islamic University, has led the discussion committee as an external examiner for the thesis in the area of Biomedical Sciences. He has been a supervisor alongside with Prof. Mike Rogan, who is an internal supervisor; and Prof. Gerard Wood. The thesis aims to explore the relationship between toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite transmitted from cats to humans, and the possibility of afflicting with Alzheimer’s disease. This happens by examining some brain samples of human brain tissue, which were obtained from Manchester Brain Bank. In addition to that, they investigate the presence and absence of some types of proteins or genes in the brains of mice. The thesis shows that investigating the difference in the gene expression of infected and uninfected samples can be verified through using the Molecular -techniques known as PCR Western blotting. Furthermore, the thesis reveals that the presence or absence of proteins is a good evidence that wild mouse populations can be useful as model systems.
Prof. Al-Hinidi cherishes this attainment saying: ” I was chosen by the University of Salford to be an external
examiner for this special distinguished thesis while doing a research field in the University of Glasgow.”
Prof. Al-Hinidi asserts that this supervision comes as part of a joint research cooperation between the Islamic University and the University of Salford. This research cooperation is, also, a fruitful outcome of seven-years partnership in various health sciences fields between the two university, in which epidemiology of Hydatidosis and Cryptosporidoisis were investigated in four visits to Slaford Universiyty.
It should be pointed out that in 2018, IUG and the University of Salford-Manchester have signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate conducting joint scientific research between the two universities. The MOU permitted using the laboratories of Environment and Biological Sciences at Salford University while professors of IUG Health Sciences can partake in various research field. According to the MOU terms, the two parties agreed on developing joint research projects, joint publication, Staff and students’ mobility, hosting professors’ visits. The implementation of this MOU has started since August 2, 2018, till three years ahead.
