3rd ASM Lecture On Elderly Vaccination

The Medical Laboratory Science Department-the faculty of health sciences at the IUG- has held a scientific lecture entitled, “Elderly Vaccination”, delivered by a group of doctors, teachers and specialists in the medical sphere.

Prof. Abdelraouf Elmanama, Prof. of Microbiology, clarified that vaccination is considered one of the most effective therapies and diseases preventer that contributes to the enhancement of the general health status in the 20th century. This is attributed to two main factors: the use of antibiotics, and the care of hygiene and nutrition. Prof. Manama also pointed out that Edward Jenner’s experiment is considered a revolution and a starting point in the concept of prevention, that the eradication of Smallpox had been done through it in 1979.

He has touched upon the achievements of producing vaccine against other diseases, and the evolution of the quality of vaccine in use. Participants showed that elderly represents a high population percentage in many countries. And this group of people, as known, don’t have the same immunity as youths, so they are more vulnerable to diseases and death; and for sure, needs a vaccinated immune system.

They also emphasized that vaccination plays an essential role for elderly in protection and reduction of patients and death cases, besides the mitigation of hospitalization period and the improvement of the ability of work.

Prof. Manama ended up emphasizing on the importance of the site and the application that follows the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Through this center, it is available to see types of vaccine may need based on factors like: health, the immunization date, the intention of travelling abroad, and the diseases. There is also an application that contains the annual vaccination schedule and many other valuable information.
