In partnership with Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, the Health Sciences Faculty of The Islamic University of Gaza has launched The ” e-bug ” project; which is a free educational resource for classroom and home use. It spreads its ideas through providing different activities and lesson plans of microorganisms, their transmission and ways to reduce their number and preventing them from spreading.
The ” e-bug ” project invoves 28 international partner countries including Palestine, represented by Prof. Dr. Abdelraouf Elmanama – Vice president for Research and Graduate Affair, at IUG. And supervised by Public Health England’s Primary Care Unit. This project targets children and young adults in order to enhance their knowledge of subjects related to Microbiology.
The event was held at Al-Quds Conferences Hall where Prof. Dr. Adel AwadAllah- President of The Islamic University, Prof. Dr. Abdelraouf Elmanama , Prof. Dr. Adnan Al-Hindi- Dean of The Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Mahmoud Dhahir- Representative of The WHO in Palestine, Dr. Ayman Al-Yazouri- Assistant Undersecretary of The Ministry of Education and a bunch/group of teachers and students at The Health Sciences faculty had attended.

” This project represents a hopeful step towards changing the community culture of antibiotics misuse which led to dramatically reduction in their effectiveness ” said Prof. Dr. AwadAllah.
He also pointed out the importance of finding new creative ways to take the community culture to a different level, where everyone must take responsibility for their own actions.
The ” e-bug ” project
Prof. Dr. Elmanama has explained that the project’s primary aim is to reduce the incidence of antibiotic resistance by educating workers in the medical field, increasing the exchange of information and experiences concerning good practices with partner countries as well as translating the educational resources and cooperation with local ministries such as health and education.
Elmanama has also discussed the work plan of the project, which is based on national-level coordination with various institutions and working on the formation of committees for the project in the sectors of education. He also mentioned the areas covered by the project including but not limited to: useful microbes, harmful microbes, (hand, respiratory, food and farm )hygiene, sexually transmitted infections , in addition to vaccines and antibiotics.
Educating The Palestinian children
Prof. Dr. Al-Hindi was thankful for the vital role played by The W.H.O ,The ministries of Health and Education in the success of the project/event assuring that this cooperation comes in the context of educating The Palestinian children in public health issues.
He also pointed out that the project’s objectives overlap with those of the service learning project at the Health Sciences Faculty.
Quantum Leap
Through a Pre-Recorded Video/ Taped Video, Prof. Cliodna McNulty- project coordinator, has warmly welcomed Palestine to the e- bug family and considered its participation in the project as a quantum leap in the community culture of proper use of antibiotics.
Educational concepts that can be easily understood
Dr. Dhahir was happy to see Palestine participating in such an international project and he appreciated the efforts the university put through to raise the scientific research and to promote the community’s culture of public health.
He also emphasized the necessity of finding harmonious cooperation between education and health, through incorporating scientific issues into education using an educational concepts that can be easily understood, so that a new generations can be built based on great scientific principles and concepts.
