A Workshop on Facilities for People with Disabilities

Department of Architecture  in collaboration with the Assistive Technology Centre at the Islamic University held a workshop on harmonizing public buildings and facilities for people with disabilities, as part of a project to improve higher education opportunities for students  with hearing disabilities.  A number of faculty members and students attended the meeting.

Head of the Department of Architecture at IUG, Prof. Anwar  Awadallah said that disability is growing due to the difficult economic conditions. This called for holding such events in hope to provide ways of easing life for people with disabilities. Prof. Awadallah urged public and civil institutions to address the issue of disabilities more actively and to take necessary steps in constructing buildings that are adequate to the disabled’s movement.

Engineer Hazem Shehada, director of the Assistive Technology Centre , explained that the workshop was held to introduce the standards for engineers to follow when developing any design suitable with the physically disabled movement, and to educate students into including these standards in their designs.  Mr. Shehada asserted that the assistive technology center is a specialized center that provides academic support for people with disability.
