The Islamic University of Gaza received an American medical delegation that included Dr. David Drake and Dr. Maria Filippone, from Des Moines University, Iowa, Dr. Bill Diemst, Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, Dr. Bob Haynes, a cardiologist, Dr. Patricia Kelly from the University of Missouri, and Dr. John Soos, a clinical surgeon from Vancouver, Canada.
Professor Adel Awadallah, IUG President, and members of the university council met with the delegation. Dr. Awadallah spoke about the different academic programmes IUG offers and its external relations with Higher Education institutions around the world. He also spoke about IUG’s contributions in the area of community service through conducting programmes and scientific research that meet the needs of the society.
The delegation met with the Faculty of Medicine’s staff and students and listened to their thoughts on the faculty’s courses and relations with the medical unions and foreign universities. The delegation also met with some of the college’s students and held a discussion with them on their experiences as medical students at IUG. The delegation was also introduced to the expansions the university is currently witnessing in the field of medicine.
The delegation’s visit also included meeting with a class of students with hearing disabilities. IUG is considered to be the first across Palestine to involve such students in university life and to offer them diploma programmes in creative design and smart phones devices.
In addition, the delegation visited the laboratories of the Faculty of Education and met with the staff of the Department of Psychology and had a tour in the labs hosted by the Centre for psychological counseling. The delegation then visited Irada center which offers rehabilitation and integration opportunities for the war injured and people with physical disabilities. Irada Center helps blend those people in the society and helps make them productive.
The visiting delegation expressed their delight to be at Islamic University of Gaza IUG and commended the great achievements IUG has accomplished since its establishment especially in its community outreach as well as international research and cooperation.
