Turning Organic Wastes into Cement is a Challenge Addressed By IUG students

Four civil engineering students from IUG provided an innovative solution to organic wastes by turning it into  cement through burning. In their graduation project titled ‘Organic Wastes Burned into Cement’, the students Hadeel Abu Abed, Aysha abu Khattab, Doaa Al Halimi, and Doaa Seyam tried to make use of organic wastes to replace cement components.

“We would collect organic wastes, mainly food leftovers, and burn them. The resulting material surprisingly turned to be solid, very matching to world standards and can be used instead of sand in concrete mixture.”

Stressing on how environmentally friendly this project is, the four engineers hope that their project, along with any other similarly important projects, would attract interested parties and encourage them to embrace it.

Working on such a project in Gaza is very difficult, mentioned one of the girls. “We could not find enough garbage, we could not have access to many laboratories’ ovens… the project is very expensive and the devices needed for tests were rare,” said the girl.
