The Department of English at IUG hosted Dr. Merriam Sir, Professor of Translation at Manchester University, to lecture on ‘Globalization and its Impact on Translation’. The lecture, which was held via Skype, is part of the Department’s continuous efforts to increase academic exposure of its faculty members and students to new ideas and perspectives on various academic and research topics. In her lecture, Dr. Sir highlighted the economic, financial, historical and social definitions of Globalization. “Translation,” said she, “has greatly and effectively contributed to translation movement across countries. Translation has made it easier for an Italian to read the literature of Africa, for example, and vice versa. Globalization has left an economic impact on the translators’ income; especially those who work with immigrants who have recently got into Europe.”
Dr. Sir also discussed some of the challenges faced by Palestinian translators. For instance, she mentioned the importance of understanding the nature of the source text paying attention to possible linguistic usages that might harm the Palestinian cause. Dr. Sir stressed on the importance of clarifying any misleading words to foreign readers.
