IUG Celebrates Hosting the UNESCO Chair in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences


Islamic University of Gaza celebrated a special scientific
event, the first of its kind in the Arab world.
 IUG is joined the network of UNESCO chair in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences.

Palestinian
astrophysicist and former NASA scientist, Suleiman Baraka, is the Chair holder.
Dr. Kamalain
K. Sha’ath is a representative of Islamic University of Gaza while Dr. Salam
Al-Agha is the representative of Al-Aqsa University; and
Dr Abdelkhaliq Al Farra is the
representative of Al-Azhar University.

Dr. Derek Elias, the
Programme Specialist for Education and Sustainable Development (ESD) at UNESCO,
Bangkok
, attended the event and has a speech at the
conferences hall of “Tiba” building at IUG.


Palestinian
scientists, community leaders and representatives of local and international
institutions attended the event along with foreign visitors. 

According to the
signed agreement, the purpose of the Chair shall be to promote an integrated
system of research, training, information
and documentation on astronomy, astrophysics
and space sciences.

Within that framework, UNESCO shall endeavour to
associate the Universities with the activities of different Chairs and
inter-university networks participating in the Programme, especially in the
Palestine, in Europe and in Africa, and with the activities of similar Chairs
in other regions of the world.

 Subject to
the terms of this Agreement, the Universities shall assume all expenses linked
to the implementation of activities undertaken by the Chair
