Galileo Award for a Palestinian Scientist from IUG
This is a tremendous honor for the Islamic University of Gaza and Palestinians that Prof Mohammed Shabat from Physics Department has been awarded the International Commission for Optics “Galileo Galilei Award 2006” in recognition of his contributions to the field of optics. The outstanding Palestinian Professor Mohammed Shabat is working at Physics Department at IUG. He was awarded Shoman Prize for Young Arab Scientists in 1995 and the Humboldt Research Fellowships in 1999 at the center of Semiconductor Technology and Opt. electronics, Duisburg- Essen University, Germany. Prof Shabat published more than 120 papers in international journals in Physics, mathematics and education and presented many papers at local and international Conferences. His research interests include nonlinear optics, electronics, magneto Static surface waves, numerical techniques, macroscopic systems, energy, applied mathematics, astrophysics and Physics education. He established a Palestinian Optical Society (POS). He has a membership in different scientific associations and committees as senior member of the IEEE and a member of the editorial board of Journal of the Islamic University.
Prof Shabat was the dean of the faculty of Science from 1993-1997 and Vice President of IUG for Administrative Affairs from 2001 to 2005.
The Galileo Galilei Award is awarded annually to a person for a contributions judged to be worthy by the award team, so the Galileo Galilei medal of ICO is awarded for outstanding contributions to the field of optics which are achieved under comparatively unfavorable circumstances.. It consists of the Galileo Galilei Medal, a cash donation and a future support for the winner.
Dr Kamalain Shaat, IUG President praised Prof Shabat for his achievements and expressed his delight on hearing the news of the award as Professor Shabat is the first Scientist from the Arab World who won it since establishment in 1993. It is worth mentioning that professor Shabat lives in Bait Hanoun, a town in Gaza most recently that suffers destruction and siege by Israeli occupation.
