IUG Genetic Diagnosis Lab

Thirteen years ago, the IUG Medical Sciences Faculty, due to the lack resources of conducting genetic diagnosis, has established the IUG Genetic Diagnosis Lab. This is the first specialized lab in the strip that undeniably has plenty bearing on the whole Gazan community. The laboratory is a medical oasis for both patients and doctors from all Gazan areas to uncover the various even accurate genetic diseases, and prescribe the remedies for each type. In the laboratory, there is a technical director and a number of technicians, who make examinations and give a helping hand for patients. Numerous consultations are also provided for the patients through highly qualified laboratory analysis professors. The lab is relied on three major aspects: conducting medical examination, providing a comprehensive research environment, and training students.

First, a range of genetic consultations are provided to the families of patients by specialists working in the lab, such as examination of Genes for Coagulation Factors, DNA scan of some genes, Clinical Chemistry, Germs and Viruses, Mediterranean Fever of the known mutations of Thalassemia, mutations of the inherited gene for cystic fibrosis, Neuro-Degenerative examination (SMA), Muscle atrophy (DMD), flow cytometry, Deleted Areas in the Male Chromosome, and Karyotype Chromosomal, in addition to diagnosis many syndromes (Prader Willi, Angel man, Down, Edward, Patao, Turner, Kleinfelter), and the change in chromosome structure and its relationship with recurrent miscarriages and certain types of cancers.


Second, the laboratory provides a suitable research environment for doctoral, master and bachelor's research, in addition to training laboratory analysis students, in which laboratory devices are available for conducting various experiments and research papers. last couple of months, IUG researchers have successfully discovered a new genetic mutation that has not been hitherto recorded in the world. The discovery was in the regard of TGM1 Gene which causes ichthyosis and thickening disease. Moreover, researchers have completed many researches on immunity, studying its relation with the frequent abortion. They have also presented statistical significance of value in this regard. Inherited genes plus diabetes are other fields of their research.

Third, this laboratory makes it possible to IUG medical sciences faculty students to get trained. Those students are trained on how to utilize the advanced technology when conducting experiments and diagnosis for diverse diseases and, therefore, matching them up with the diseases they have been studying in books; that’s for fostering the practical aspects equally with the theoretical one.

The laboratory includes a number of chambers which make it easier for the trained students to get educated and do more research. Clinical chemistry and hormones, inherited diseases, advanced chemical diagnosis are some of the lab champers there. The Diagnosis devices that are available in the lab include: PCR, RT- PCR, Sequencer, Electrophoresis, and Micro-Array.

 

Dr. Ahmed Selmy, Head of Medical Analysis Department, has declared that: "It is in progress that more improvements are being worked on to make the labs provided with better, advanced and new devices for public". The center is going to be commenced in some months at the newly prepared place, near the eastern gate of the campus, so that is to be accessed easily, as he added.

"The Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordinating (TIKA), the Islamic Palestinian Bank, The Qatari Red Crescent, Islamic Relief, Palestinian Medical Relief, French Consulate-Jerusalem, and Dr. Rafik Al-Balaa – Lebanon were all donor foundations that facilitated establishing this center," confirmed Dr. Mazen Al-zaharna, Dean of Medical Sciences Faculty.
