22 - Apr - 2020

On the 20th of March 2020, the Multilingual Matters/Channel View Publications-Uk- has officially approved the book entitled of "Multilingual Online Academic Collaborations as Resistance, Crossing Impassable Borders" to be for publish in the coming 31th August, 2020.

Launching the co-edited book is a fruitful outcome of a long-term cooperation between the Islamic University-Gaza and Glasgow University- Uk and is now crowned with great success as the book about to be publish. In precise, it was originally edited by Prof. Alison Phipps, UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts, and Professor of Languages and Intercultural Studies at the University of Glasgow; in addition to Prof. Nazmi Al-Masri, Associate Professor of Education at the Islamic University of Gaza; and Prof. Giovanna Fassetta, Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow.

The title manifests its content. This 200-pages book details the online academic collaborations between universities in Europe, USA and Palestine. It, vividly, recounts the challenges and successes of the online collaborations which help promote the academic connections and conversations with the Gaza Strip. "This book is a kind of resistance against the ongoing blockade imposed on Gaza since 2007", Prof. Al-Masri said.

Nine chapters are the content of the book. They exhibit how languages and the internet facilitate encounters, and the fundamental importance this has as a form of defiance and resistance to the physical confinement experienced by Palestinian academics and students. The chapters, in addition, highlight the limitations of multilingual and intercultural encounters that Palestinians have already been deprived of the sensory proximity of face-to-face situations. Furthermore, they study what is lost in the translation of languages, practices and experiences from the ‘real’ to the ‘virtual’ world.
