Operating Wave Energy Plant

17 - Mar - 2019

The IUG Mechanical Engineering Department has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Giz to operate the wave energy plant located at the Gaza port, which is a thriving outcome of a graduation's project.

Giz has been officially commissioned, by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to implement the project of "Strengthening the Resilience of Gaza Population" and as such operating the wave energy plant at the Gaza port.

The project focuses especially on renewable energy and green economy in the Gaza Strip, where basic services are critically limited. Planned interventions of German Ministry are clustered into three fields of action: improvement of essential basic infrastructure, improved availability of relevant education and further training in direly needed professions, and a contribution to the valorization of local innovations in the field green economy for small and smallest enterprises.

The three action fields are closely intertwined with different perspectives on strengthening resilience. In the immediate kick-of face of the project, the priority lies in the needs-based implementation of measures in action filed 1 through financing contracts with established local and international patterns.

This project comes to alleviate the severe electricity shortage which is caught in a continuously deteriorating crisis that has noticeable effects on the living conditions of the 2.1 million inhabitants for more than a decade.
