11. ENGC 6331 Shearing Properties of Soil.
This course provides a thorough discussion of shearing properties of soils, including use of effective versus total stresses, effects of drainage, use of modified failure envelopes, failure and yield criteria, properties of both saturated and partially saturated soils, sensitivity and thixotropy, and critical state soil mechanics, Laboratory experiments allow students to perform direct shear and triaxial shear tests.
12. ENGC 6333 Ground Improvement.
Preloading vertical drains, deep compaction of cohesionless soils: vibrofloatation, vibratory probes, compaction piles, dynamic compaction blasting, grouting, compaction groutiong, chemical grouting, jet grouting. Soil reinforcement: soil nailing, micro piles, reinforced earth, stone columns, lime columns, geotextiles, freezing, and electro osmsis.
13. ENGC 6334 Design of Earth Retaining Structures.
Analysis and design is covered for such earth retention systems as retaining walls, free-standing sheet pile walls, braced excavation, slurry walls, tide-back retention system, reinforced earth, frozen soil walls, anchored bulkhead, and cellular cofferdams. The problems involved with the interaction of the structures with soil are studied. Both classical and more refined methods of analysis are included and considerable attention is directed towards field observation.
14. ENGC 6335 Behavior and Design of Deep Foundations.
Ultimate capacities and load-deflection of piles and drilled shafts subjected to compressive loads, tensile loads, effects of duration of load, soil-structure interaction, two-and three-dimensioal analysis of pile groups with closely spaced piles, effects of installation, inspection of deep foundations and full-scale field tests.
15. ENGC 6338 Geotechnics of Waste Management.
Geotechnical aspects for the containment and remediation of waste. 14. EELE6328 Control of Discrete-Event Systems I
This course is an introduction to the control of discrete, asynchronous, nondeterministic systems like manufacturing, traffic and communication systems. Architectural issues (modular, decentralized and hierarchical control) are emphasized. The theory is developed in an elementary framework of automata, formal languages and Petri nets, and is supported by a software package for creating applications.
