Online Learning In IUG: A Weapon To Fight Coronavirus

As the Coronavirus epidemic spreads across the globe, loads of universities and schools have been shuttered, the educational process indefinitely suspended. No one actually knows how long will last. Therefore, most of the world universities incline  to adopt the virtual learning culture with students. Islamic University of Gaza is one of these seeking universities.

On Saturday, the 14th of March, 2020, IUG has officially declared on its Facebook Account the kick off with the e-learning process, instructing its students to follow up the learning courses on the Moodle Platform. To facilitate the process, Prof. Nazmi Al-Masri, the professor who long employs the Moodle platform in his teaching classes, held a session to train the English department's academic staff in how to utilize pedagogical technological tools and e-learning. Prof. Al-Masri published on his Facebook account that this training aims at fasten the communication with students as to feed them with a plenty of recorded lectures, assignments, and other related activities. 

 

 

Three days ago, the English Department has launched the first e-learning session with the students taking Shakespeare Course. Prof. Refaat Areer, Deputy Head of IUG English Department, said on his Twitter account, " Islamic University has been working on using online platforms for ages. Now these long hours of training have come in handy. I also find it apt that the class began with Hamlet saying: 'How all occasions do inform against me".

Mohammed al- Hirthany, a student of the course, tweeted, " Then don't let #Corona scares you from embracing new experiences. This is the First online lecture with Dr Refaat".

This step, e-learning as a weapon to fight coronavirus, is part of the issue that the Islamic University has stated last week in response to the emergency state declared by the Government, the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and the Health Ministry against Coronavirus. As the University council had met in an emergency session on Monday, 9th of March, 2020 to discuss the precautionary plan against the coronavirus outbreak, they agreed on the following 

1-  The Islamic university has continually pledged allegiance to the instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education regarding the suspension of academic and administrative work in campus during the state of emergency.

2-  IUG shall switch to the e-learning plan in the walk of suspension of the educational process since the 7th of March 2020. The university will harness all human and technical potentials to make this goal come true.

3-  Three committees will be formed to follow up the emergency state. The first is the higher committee to manage the emergency sate. The second is the e-learning committee that includes specialists' professors in the field. The last is the health awareness committee that aims to curb the spread of the new coronavirus in the Gaza Strip.

4-  The Council calls on the students to take the initiative to communicate with deans, heads of departments and their teachers to inquire about any academic matters. In addition, the Deanship of Student Affairs, The Deanship of Admissions and Registration and the Financial Department will be available to introduce administrative services to make the e-learning smoother and easier.

It's worth noting that all Coronavirus cases that have been suspected in the Gaza strip were Negative.
